🍁 Union Mill & Bull Run–Occoquan Trail + Paradise Springs Winery

Clifton, VA
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (Three Paws Up!)

This weekend’s adventure took us to the Union Mill & Bull Run–Occoquan Trail, and it was such a gorgeous fall hike. Most of the trail winds right along the water, giving us peaceful views, rushing sounds, and plenty of cool spots for Bear to splash around. He especially loved hopping in and out of the streams — and the stepping stones along the water were a fun surprise you definitely don’t want to miss!

If you want to explore the route yourself, you can check out the full trail details on AllTrails here: Union Mill & Bull Run–Occoquan Trail.

While the trail is scenic, be prepared for large stones throughout the path. It’s nothing too tricky, but worth noting if you prefer smoother trails. The mix of rocky terrain, flowing water, and bright fall leaves made this one of those hikes that feels both calming and energizing.

After exploring the trail, we walked directly across the road to Paradise Springs Winery — the perfect post-hike wind-down. They offer plenty of outdoor seating (where Bear was thrilled to nap in the sun), but if you’re visiting dog-free, there’s also comfortable indoor seating inside the historic tasting room.

We shared a bottle of the Mélange 2022, a light, easy-drinking red that paired beautifully with the fall weather. Their pizza truck had two great options that day: the Back to Basics and the unexpectedly amazing Bombay Tandoor. I never imagined Indian flavors on pizza, but it was the star of the show — warm spices, a little heat, and the perfect cozy twist.

Beautiful water views, rocky forest terrain, amazing wine, and unforgettable pizza — a perfect fall pairing.

I’m AJ

Mom of three, lover of adventure, and proud human to one very enthusiastic hiking partner – our Aussie – named Bear. Whether we’re exploring a hidden trail in Northern Virginia, wandering along the Potomac, or finding unexpected beauty in a city park, Bear and I are always on the lookout for our next great walk.

This blog is where I’ll share our favorite routes, little discoveries, and the moments of calm (and chaos) that come with hiking alongside a big, curious dog. I’ve always believed the best adventures don’t have to be far from home — sometimes, they’re just a few miles down a new trail.

And while most of these adventures include Bear’s happy paws, every now and then, I’ll post about solo adventures — because sometimes, the best walks are paws optional.
